Sophie Turner recently revealed in an interview that Game of Thrones execs placed weight loss pressure on her. She discussed the actions of the studio execs while speaking to Marie Claire Australia.
When the Weight Loss Pressure Began
Sophie Turner is the actress who played Sansa Stark on the HBO hit series, Game of Thrones. Both the character and the actress who played her went through some serious struggles throughout the length of the show. In fact, according to Turner, many of the challenges she faced occurred on set, not necessarily in her personal life.
In the Marie Claire Australia magazine interview, Turner explained that she was very young when the show started. Therefore, as she went through the later stages of puberty, she experienced a change in her metabolism. The publication of the interview made it clear that this is very common for both young men and women who have recently gone through puberty. This change in her body turned on the weight loss pressure behind the scenes of the show.
Sophie Turner’s Battles with Physical Changes and Mental Health
“I have experienced mental illness firsthand and I’ve seen what it can do to the people around [the sufferers] as well,” said Turner in the interview. She explained that her metabolism took a nosedive “to the depths of the ocean” and she experienced side effects from that. These included acne and weight gain. While this is challenging for any young woman, it was even harder for Turner who had to go through it on camera and in front of millions of viewers worldwide.
Though she was already uncomfortable with the way her body was changing, film and television studios added to the weight loss pressure.
Seeking a Therapist’s Help
“Then came pressure from film and television studios to lose weight,” she said. From there, she sought out the assistance of a therapist. She explained that while she feels everyone can benefit from the help of a therapist, this is particularly true in this type of situation. When people regularly apply weight loss pressure, it can make you feel as though you’re simply not good enough.
Turner found that when you’re experiencing weight loss pressure, it’s important to have someone to talk to. A therapist is a good choice and can help you get through those struggles. It made a considerable difference for her.
This was good news as the weight loss pressure caused symptoms of serious depression. She had lost her motivation to go out, stopped seeing her friends and would cry all the time. She struggled just to get dressed and go outside. Talking about it helped her through it and the show.
